Tanzania Kenya Rwanda And Zanzibar 3 Week Itinerary 2026-2027

A 3-week itinerary covering Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, and Zanzibar offers an incredible blend of East Africa’s most sought-after experiences, typically starting with a Tanzanian safari in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, followed by Kenya’s Maasai Mara, then a flight to Rwanda for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, and concluding with relaxation on Zanzibar’s beaches. This multi-country adventure is best planned for 2026 or 2027 to secure preferred accommodations and permits, balancing intensive wildlife viewing with cultural immersion and coastal leisure. The exact route and pacing will depend on your priorities, whether it’s maximizing game drives, engaging deeply with local communities, or simply unwinding by the Indian Ocean.

Understanding Your 3-Week East Africa Adventure: Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda & Zanzibar

Embarking on a three-week journey that stitches together Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, and Zanzibar is a dream for many travelers seeking the quintessential East African experience. This ambitious itinerary allows you to witness the planet’s most spectacular wildlife migrations, stand in awe of mountain gorillas, and soak up the sun on pristine tropical shores. However, such a diverse trip requires careful planning, especially when aiming for travel in 2026 or 2027, as popular lodges, permits, and internal flights book up well in advance.

The core appeal of a Tanzania Kenya Rwanda and Zanzibar 3 week itinerary lies in its variety. You’ll traverse the legendary Serengeti, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, feel the pulse of the Maasai Mara, potentially track chimpanzees in Gombe or Mahale (Tanzania), search for gorillas in Rwanda, and then swap dusty plains for turquoise waters in Zanzibar. This isn’t just a vacation; it’s a deep look at diverse ecosystems, unique cultures, and impressive landscapes.

When considering this trip for 2026-2027, it’s crucial to understand the logistical considerations. Flying between these destinations is almost always necessary, and coordinating these flights, along with ground transfers and safari vehicles, is where expert planning makes all the difference. The duration of three weeks is ideal, offering enough time to experience the highlights without feeling overly rushed, though it still demands efficient use of every day.

The Big Picture: Key Components of Your 3-Week Itinerary

To craft a cohesive Tanzania Kenya Rwanda and Zanzibar 3 week itinerary, we need to break down the essential elements and how they fit together:

  • Tanzania Safari (5-7 days): This is often the anchor of any East African trip. Expect to explore the northern circuit, including the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Depending on the season, you might witness the Great Migration.
  • Kenya Safari (3-5 days): The Maasai Mara National Reserve is the logical next step, famous for its high predator density and continuation of the Great Migration from the Serengeti.
  • Rwanda Gorilla Trekking (3-4 days): A flight to Kigali, followed by a drive to Volcanoes National Park for a life-changing gorilla encounter. This is a distinct experience from the savannah safaris.
  • Zanzibar Relaxation (4-6 days): Fly from mainland Tanzania or Rwanda to Zanzibar for pristine beaches, spice tours, historical Stone Town, and diving/snorkeling opportunities.
  • Travel Days (2-3 days): Factor in time for international flights, internal flights between countries, and transfers.

The sequence can vary, but this flow—Tanzania safari, Kenya safari, Rwanda trek, Zanzibar beach—is common due to flight logistics and the desire to end on a relaxing note. For 2026-2027 travel, booking internal flights and gorilla permits is paramount, often requiring a lead time of 6-12 months, especially for peak seasons.

Itinerary Option 1: The Classic Northern Circuit & Gorilla Focus (Most Popular)

This itinerary prioritizes the iconic wildlife of Tanzania and Kenya, followed by the unforgettable experience of trekking with mountain gorillas in Rwanda, and ending with a well-deserved break in Zanzibar. It’s a well-trodden path for good reason, offering a comprehensive taste of East Africa’s best.

Days 1-7: Tanzania – Serengeti & Ngorongoro Immersion

Your journey begins in Tanzania, flying into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). After an overnight stay, you’ll typically head to the northern safari circuit.

  • Day 1: Arrival in Arusha/Kilimanjaro. Transfer to your lodge.
  • Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park. Known for its large elephant herds and baobab trees. Game drive.
  • Day 3: Tarangire to Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a full-day game drive. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to an exceptional concentration of wildlife, including the endangered black rhino.
  • Day 4: Ngorongoro to Serengeti National Park. Drive into the vast plains of the Serengeti, stopping at Olduvai Gorge en route if time permits. Afternoon game drive.
  • Day 5-6: Serengeti National Park. Full days exploring different regions of the Serengeti. Depending on the time of year (e.g., 2026 or 2027), you might track the Great Migration. Options include hot air balloon safaris for a unique perspective.
  • Day 7: Serengeti to Arusha/Kilimanjaro. Morning game drive before flying from a Serengeti airstrip back to Arusha for an overnight.

Why this works: This segment provides the quintessential Tanzanian safari experience, covering diverse landscapes and high wildlife density. The Serengeti’s sheer scale and the Ngorongoro Crater’s unique ecosystem are unmissable.

Trade-offs: This is a popular route, so expect other vehicles. The distances covered are significant, requiring efficient logistics.

Booking for 2026-2027: Lodges in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, especially those with prime locations, are booked up to a year in advance for peak seasons. Early booking is essential.

Days 8-11: Kenya – The Maasai Mara Experience

From Arusha, you’ll typically fly or drive across the border into Kenya, heading straight for the legendary Maasai Mara.

  • Day 8: Arusha to Maasai Mara. Fly from Arusha to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Transfer to your camp/lodge and start an afternoon game drive.
  • Day 9-10: Maasai Mara National Reserve. Two full days dedicated to exploring the Mara. Game drives focusing on predator sightings, birdlife, and potentially the Great Migration if your timing aligns with its presence in the Mara (typically July-October). A visit to a Maasai village can be arranged.
  • Day 11: Maasai Mara to Nairobi. Morning game drive, followed by a flight from the Mara airstrip to Wilson Airport in Nairobi. Overnight in Nairobi or connect to your flight to Kigali, Rwanda.

Why this works: The Maasai Mara offers a different feel to the Serengeti, often with more open grasslands ideal for spotting big cats. Its proximity to the Serengeti means the migration can move between the two parks.

Trade-offs: The Mara can also be crowded, especially during migration season. The quality of camps and lodges varies significantly, impacting the experience.

Booking for 2026-2027: Camps with exclusive conservancy access often have higher price points but offer a more private experience. Book these well in advance.

Days 12-15: Rwanda – Gorilla Trekking Adventure

This is the highlight for many, a deeply moving encounter with endangered mountain gorillas.

  • Day 12: Fly to Kigali & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park. Arrive at Kigali International Airport (KGL). Meet your driver-guide and begin the scenic 2-3 hour drive to the Musanze region, near Volcanoes National Park. Overnight in a lodge near the park.
  • Day 13: Gorilla Trekking Day. After an early morning briefing at the park headquarters, you’ll be assigned a gorilla family and start a trek. The duration and difficulty vary greatly depending on the gorillas’ location. After spending up to one hour with the gorillas, you’ll return to your lodge.
  • Day 14: Optional Activities & Transfer to Kigali. Choose from activities like golden monkey trekking, visiting the Dian Fossey research center, or exploring local communities. In the afternoon, drive back to Kigali.
  • Day 15: Fly to Zanzibar. Depending on flight schedules, you might have time for a brief city tour of Kigali (e.g., Genocide Memorial) before flying to Zanzibar (ZNZ).

Why this works: Rwanda is renowned for its well-organized and ethical gorilla trekking experience, with a high success rate and beautiful mountain scenery.

Trade-offs: Gorilla permits are expensive and limited. The trekking can be physically demanding, requiring a reasonable level of fitness. The drive from Kigali can be long.

Booking for 2026-2027: Gorilla permits for Rwanda are US$1,500 per person and must be booked months, often a year, in advance, especially for specific dates in 2026 or 2027. Availability dictates your trekking date.

Days 16-21: Zanzibar – Island Paradise

Conclude your adventure with relaxation and exploration on the spice island.

  • Day 16: Arrive in Zanzibar & Stone Town. Transfer to your hotel in Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore its narrow streets, historical buildings, and vibrant markets.
  • Day 17: Stone Town & Spice Tour. Morning exploration of Stone Town (e.g., House of Wonders, Old Fort, slave market site). Afternoon spice tour to learn about local agriculture and taste exotic fruits.
  • Day 18-20: Beach Relaxation. Transfer to your chosen beach resort on the north, east, or southeast coast (e.g., Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, Jambiani). Enjoy swimming, snorkeling, diving, water sports, or simply relaxing on the white-sand beaches. Day trips for snorkeling at Mnemba Atoll or visiting Jozani Forest (for red colobus monkeys) can be arranged.
  • Day 21: Departure. Transfer to Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ) for your onward international flight.

Why this works: Zanzibar offers a perfect contrast to the safari and trekking, providing a tropical escape with rich history and culture.

Trade-offs: Zanzibar can be busy, and some beaches are more developed than others. Consider the season for seaweed on certain coasts.

Booking for 2026-2027: Beach resorts, especially those offering private villas or high-end amenities, should be booked several months ahead, particularly for popular periods.

Itinerary Option 2: Extended Tanzania & Kenya, Plus a Taste of Rwanda & Zanzibar

This variation dedicates more time to the safari experience, potentially including more remote Tanzanian parks or longer stays in the Serengeti and Mara, while still incorporating essential elements of Rwanda and Zanzibar.

This option might be ideal for serious wildlife photographers or enthusiasts who want a deeper immersion in the savannah ecosystems. It requires careful timing of internal flights and may involve slightly longer travel days.

Days 1-10: Tanzania – Deep look at Northern & Southern Circuits

Expand your Tanzanian experience beyond the classic northern circuit.

  • Day 1-2: Arrival & Arusha. Fly into JRO, overnight in Arusha.
  • Day 3-4: Tarangire & Lake Manyara. Explore Tarangire’s elephants and then Lake Manyara National Park, famous for its tree-climbing lions and diverse birdlife.
  • Day 5-7: Ngorongoro Crater & Empakai Crater rim. Spend two days exploring the Crater floor and enjoy scenic walks or cultural visits near the Crater rim.
  • Day 8-10: Serengeti National Park. Extended stay in the Serengeti, possibly focusing on different regions (e.g., central, north, south) to track migration patterns or explore less-visited areas. Consider a fly-in safari to more remote parks like Ruaha or Selous if time and budget allow, though this significantly changes the logistics.

Why this works: More time in Tanzania allows for a slower pace, deeper exploration, and the chance to see varied landscapes and wildlife behaviors. It reduces the feeling of being rushed.

Trade-offs: This uses a larger portion of your three weeks, meaning less time for Kenya, Rwanda, or Zanzibar. If you want to see the migration in both Serengeti and Mara, timing becomes critical.

Booking for 2026-2027: Lodges in less-visited parts of the Serengeti or in southern parks like Ruaha require booking even further in advance due to limited capacity.

Days 11-14: Kenya – Maasai Mara & Lake Victoria Region

A slightly shorter but still impactful Kenyan safari.

  • Day 11: Serengeti to Maasai Mara. Fly from a Serengeti airstrip to the Maasai Mara. Afternoon game drive.
  • Day 12-13: Maasai Mara. Full days exploring the Mara.
  • Day 14: Maasai Mara to Nairobi, then fly to Kigali. Morning game drive, fly to Nairobi, and connect to your flight to Kigali.

Why this works: This maintains the core Maasai Mara experience, which is essential for many travelers.

Trade-offs: Less time in Kenya means you might miss out on other Kenyan parks like Amboseli (for elephants with Kilimanjaro backdrop) or Samburu.

Days 15-17: Rwanda – Gorilla Trek & Kigali

A condensed but impactful Rwandan experience.

  • Day 15: Arrive Kigali & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park.
  • Day 16: Gorilla Trekking. The main event.
  • Day 17: Transfer to Kigali & Fly to Zanzibar. Morning activity or transfer, then fly to Zanzibar.

Why this works: Ensures you don’t miss out on the unique gorilla trekking experience, even with less time.

Trade-offs: Less time for other Rwandan attractions or a more relaxed pace.

Booking for 2026-2027: Permits are the priority, as noted before. Lodging near Volcanoes Park is also competitive.

Days 18-21: Zanzibar – Beach Bliss

A shorter but sweet conclusion on the island.

  • Day 18: Arrive Zanzibar & Stone Town. Explore Stone Town.
  • Day 19: Spice Tour & Beach Transfer. Spice tour, then transfer to a beach resort.
  • Day 20: Beach Relaxation. Enjoy the coast.
  • Day 21: Departure. Fly from ZNZ.

Why this works: Provides the essential Zanzibar experience of relaxation and culture.

Trade-offs: Less time for island exploration, diving, or visiting more remote beaches.

Itinerary Option 3: A Wildlife Focus with Less Driving

This itinerary emphasizes minimizing long driving days by utilizing internal flights more extensively, focusing on key wildlife areas and ensuring a smoother flow, particularly for those who prefer not to spend too much time in transit.

Days 1-6: Tanzania – Serengeti & Ngorongoro via Flights

Maximize time on the ground in prime locations.

  • Day 1: Arrival JRO, transfer to Arusha.
  • Day 2: Fly Arusha to Serengeti. Direct flight into a Serengeti airstrip. Afternoon game drive.
  • Day 3-5: Serengeti National Park. Three full days exploring the Serengeti, perhaps moving between camps to follow migration patterns or explore different zones.
  • Day 6: Fly Serengeti to Kilimanjaro, transfer to Karatu/Ngorongoro. Morning game drive, fly back towards JRO, and transfer to a lodge near the Ngorongoro Crater.

Why this works: Significantly reduces driving time within Tanzania, allowing for more game viewing time. This is especially beneficial for those who find long game drives tiring.

Trade-offs: Internal flights add to the overall cost of the itinerary. You miss the scenic drive through the Maasai lands and potential stops like Tarangire or Lake Manyara.

Booking for 2026-2027: Flight schedules need to be checked for availability, and seats on small bush planes can fill up quickly, so booking these flights well in advance is crucial.

Days 7-10: Kenya – Maasai Mara by Air

Quick and efficient access to the Mara.

  • Day 7: Fly Arusha/JRO to Maasai Mara. Depending on flight routes, you might fly from JRO to Nairobi and then connect to the Mara, or potentially a more direct charter if feasible.
  • Day 8-9: Maasai Mara National Reserve. Two full days of game drives.
  • Day 10: Fly Maasai Mara to Nairobi. Morning game drive, then fly to Nairobi for an overnight stay or onward flight.

Why this works: This is the fastest way to get to the Maasai Mara from Tanzania, maximizing your time in the park and minimizing travel fatigue.

Trade-offs: Misses the overland experience between Tanzania and Kenya, which can offer insights into local life and landscapes.

Days 11-14: Rwanda – Gorilla Trekking via Flight

Direct flights make this segment efficient.

  • Day 11: Fly Nairobi to Kigali. Arrive in Kigali and transfer to Volcanoes National Park.
  • Day 12: Gorilla Trekking.
  • Day 13: Optional activity or transfer back to Kigali.
  • Day 14: Fly Kigali to Zanzibar.

Why this works: Prioritizes the key experiences with minimal transit time on the ground between these countries.

Trade-offs: You won’t see the countryside between Kigali and Volcanoes Park, or the city of Kigali in depth.

Booking for 2026-2027: As always, gorilla permits are the critical booking element. Flight availability between Nairobi and Kigali, and then Kigali and Zanzibar, should be confirmed early.

Days 15-21: Zanzibar – Extended Island Stay

More time to explore Zanzibar’s diverse offerings.

  • Day 15: Arrive Zanzibar & Stone Town.
  • Day 16: Stone Town & Spice Tour.
  • Day 17-20: Beach Relaxation & Activities. Choose a specific beach area (e.g., north for lively Nungwi, east for kite-surfing in Paje) and spend four days enjoying the coast. Consider a day trip to Prison Island for giant tortoises or a sunset dhow cruise.
  • Day 21: Departure.

Why this works: Allows for a more relaxed pace on Zanzibar, with ample time for activities beyond just relaxing on the beach.

Trade-offs: Requires more time dedicated to the island, potentially shortening time in safari destinations if you were to keep this at exactly 3 weeks with minimal changes elsewhere.

Crucial Planning Considerations for Your 3-Week Tanzania Kenya Rwanda Zanzibar Trip

Planning a multi-country East African itinerary requires meticulous attention to detail. For your Tanzania Kenya Rwanda and Zanzibar 3 week itinerary in 2026 or 2027, consider these vital factors:

Visa Requirements

Visa regulations can change, so always check the latest requirements for your nationality for Tanzania, Kenya, and Rwanda. Many nationalities can obtain visas on arrival or online (e-visas), but it’s best to confirm and apply in advance to avoid any last-minute issues. Rwanda offers a single tourist visa that covers entry into Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya, which can simplify logistics if you plan to visit these countries.

Best Time to Travel (2026-2027)

The “best” time depends on your priorities:

  • Great Migration: Generally, the migration is in the Serengeti from January to June, crossing the Grumeti River (May/June), and then in the Maasai Mara from July to October. Specific locations vary yearly.
  • Gorilla Trekking: Rwanda’s dry seasons (June-September and December-February) are generally considered best for trekking, with less rain and mud. However, gorillas can be trekked year-round.
  • Zanzibar: The driest and sunniest months are typically June to October and December to February. The ‘long rains’ are usually from March to May.
  • General Safari: The dry season (June-October) is excellent for game viewing as animals congregate around water sources. However, the green season (November-May) offers lush landscapes and fewer crowds.

For a Tanzania Kenya Rwanda and Zanzibar 3 week itinerary, aiming for the shoulder seasons (e.g., September-October or late May-June) can offer a good balance of favorable weather, wildlife viewing, and potentially fewer crowds and better prices for 2026-2027 travel.

Flights: Internal & International

This is where significant planning and cost come into play.

  • International Flights: Book your flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and out of Zanzibar (ZNZ), or vice versa.
  • Internal Flights: These are essential for connecting the dots efficiently. Expect flights between:
    • Arusha/JRO and Serengeti airstrips.
    • Serengeti airstrips and Nairobi.
    • Nairobi and Kigali.
    • Kigali and Zanzibar.
    • (Alternatively, Kigali to Kilimanjaro/Arusha, then to Zanzibar).

Booking for 2026-2027: Internal flight availability and pricing can fluctuate. Booking these as part of a package with a reputable tour operator is highly recommended. They have access to consolidated fares and can manage the complex routing.

Accommodation Styles

Your choice of accommodation will significantly impact your experience and budget.

  • Tanzania/Kenya: Options range from budget-friendly tented camps and lodges to mid-range hotels and exclusive luxury lodges. Consider proximity to wildlife areas and the exclusivity of conservancies (which often cost more but offer better experiences).
  • Rwanda: Lodges near Volcanoes National Park range from basic to high-end luxury. Permit holders often aim for mid-range to luxury lodges due to the investment in the trek itself.
  • Zanzibar: From boutique hotels in Stone Town to beachfront bungalows and luxury resorts, there’s a wide spectrum.

Booking for 2026-2027: Popular lodges, especially those with unique locations or exclusive access, sell out months in advance. Research and book your preferred style early.

Gorilla Permits: The Key to Rwanda

As mentioned, Rwanda gorilla permits are US$1,500 per person. These are strictly limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. For your Tanzania Kenya Rwanda and Zanzibar 3 week itinerary, securing these permits for your desired dates in 2026 or 2027 is non-negotiable and should be one of your first booking priorities.

Packing Essentials

Pack light, neutral-colored clothing suitable for game drives (long sleeves and trousers for sun and insect protection), a warm layer for cool evenings and early mornings, comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, insect repellent, a reusable water bottle, and a good camera. Binoculars are highly recommended. For gorilla trekking, you’ll need sturdy hiking boots, long trousers, and a rain jacket.

Customizing Your 3-Week Tanzania Kenya Rwanda Zanzibar Itinerary

While the above itineraries offer solid frameworks, personalization is key. Consider these adjustments for your 2026-2027 trip:

For the Wildlife Enthusiast

  • Add more days in Serengeti/Mara: Extend your safari time to explore different ecosystems within these parks or their surrounding conservancies.
  • Include other Tanzanian parks: If you have more time or are willing to sacrifice time elsewhere, consider adding Ruaha National Park (known for its large predator populations) or Selous Game Reserve (for river safaris). This would require more internal flights.
  • Focus on birdwatching: If birding is a passion, tailor your game drives and choose locations known for diverse avian life (e.g., Lake Manyara, various wetlands).

For the Culture Seeker

  • Maasai Village Visits: Integrate authentic cultural visits into your itinerary in both Kenya and Tanzania.
  • Local Community Projects: Look for opportunities to visit or support local schools or conservation initiatives.
  • Explore Stone Town Deeper: Spend an extra day or two in Zanzibar’s Stone Town to explore its history, architecture, and local life.

For the Adventure Traveler

  • Climbing Kilimanjaro: While a 3-week itinerary is tight for a Kilimanjaro climb (which typically takes 5-9 days), it’s possible to *replace* a significant portion of the safari or Zanzibar time with a shorter climb (e.g., Marangu or Machame route). This would be a very different trip focus.
  • Chimpanzee Trekking: Consider adding Gombe Stream National Park or Mahale Mountains National Park in Tanzania for chimpanzee trekking. This requires dedicated time and internal flights, often extending the itinerary beyond three weeks.
  • Water Sports in Zanzibar: Dedicate more time to diving, snorkeling, kite-surfing, or deep-sea fishing.

For the Relaxation Seeker

  • Longer Beach Stays: Allocate more days to Zanzibar, perhaps splitting your time between two different coastal areas for varied experiences.
  • Shorter Safari Legs: Opt for fly-in safaris to minimize travel days and maximize relaxation at luxurious lodges.

Budgeting for Your 2026-2027 Tanzania Kenya Rwanda Zanzibar Trip

A Tanzania Kenya Rwanda and Zanzibar 3 week itinerary is a significant investment. Costs can vary wildly based on accommodation style, transport choices, and the specific activities included. Here’s a general breakdown:

  • Permits: Gorilla permits (US$1,500 pp in Rwanda) are a major fixed cost. Park entrance fees in Tanzania and Kenya also add up.
  • Accommodation: Ranges from $150-$300 per person per night for mid-range to $500-$1500+ per person per night for luxury lodges/camps.
  • Internal Flights: Expect to budget $300-$700+ per person for key internal flights (e.g., Serengeti to Nairobi, Nairobi to Kigali).
  • Safari Vehicles & Guides: Daily rates can range from $200-$500+ per vehicle/guide, depending on exclusivity and vehicle type.
  • Meals: Often included in safari lodge rates, but factor in lunches/dinners in cities or Zanzibar.
  • Miscellaneous: Tips, souvenirs, drinks, travel insurance.

Estimated Budget Range (per person, excluding international flights):

  • Mid-Range: US$7,000 – $10,000+ (comfortable lodges, good guides, standard camps, includes permits and key internal flights).
  • Luxury: US$12,000 – $20,000+ (high-end lodges, exclusive conservancies, private charters, premium service).

Booking for 2026-2027: Prices for 2026 and 2027 are generally released by operators in mid-2025. Early booking can sometimes secure better rates, especially for lodges with fixed pricing.

The 7 Days Serengeti River Crossing Safari was an unforgettable experience. Witnessing the wildebeest migration bravely crossing the Mara River was awe-inspiring and a little heart-stopping! We had excellent game drives, spotting lions, elephants, and numerous bird species. Our guide was fantastic at finding the best viewing spots. While the river crossing is the main event, the Serengeti itself is teeming with life. The lodges were comfortable, though a couple were a bit more basic than expected for the price. Still, the wildlife made it all worthwhile. We're considering another safari in 2026.
